Netherworld Haunted House

Netherworld Haunted House is a self-guided, walk-through haunted attraction located in Atlanta, Georgia that began in 1997. This seasonal Halloween based event is known for its over-the-top special effects, intense make-up, elaborate costuming, skilled stunt actors, unique monsters and robotic creatures, unusual themes, and chilling detail.

Unlike many haunted events at that time, Netherworld developed an original theme that was not based on popular movies such as slasher films, but rather a unique storyline. The event moved several times and then settled in Norcross, GA that also houses other businesses including an Antique Mall. Since then Netherworld has continued to grow as an event, adding the latest special effects and “scare tactics” every season. In recent years Netherworld has become nationally known and attracts customers from all over the United States when it opens in October of each year.

Themes

The Collector is an icon character at Netherworld Haunted House in Norcross, GA.

Over the years there have been many themes or storylines for this event. In the early years there was only one haunted house, and then a second smaller haunt where guests would wear 3D ChromaDepth glasses was added in 1999 when Netherworld world moved to its current location in the Georgia Antique Center. In 2000 a third event was added at a remote location for one year called Bloodfeast, a replica of a Medieval Torture Chamber. This event can now be seen every Spring at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. In 2003 Netherworld expanded with a third attraction that was located one floor below the larger one. It began as Tomb of Darkness, a very dark show, and slowly evolved into a more gory reality based event when compared with the traditional gothic horror elements of the upstairs haunt. In 2007 The 3D Show and the Main show were combined in Leviathan, and a new intro section and gift shop were added.

Other aspects

Netherworld has always created original monsters and props as it was founded by TV and Movie professionals, including costume designers, Producers and Creature fabricators. Every night the attraction's open actors are transformed into monsters to scare and entertain the guests that go through the haunted house. Some perform stunts such as bungee jumps and sliding. Netherworld is also known for its elaborate sets, innovative special effects, lighting and sound. Many visitors enjoy the numerous amount of actors disguised as nightmarish creatures that stalk the parking lot before the haunted house actually begins, starting the experience the moment guests get out of their cars. The creators had it in their mind to transport guests to another world, as the name implies.

Film connections

The 2009 Movie Zombieland had portions filmed inside of Netherworld, and members of the Netherworld crew participated in the films production. Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 2009 film also rented props from the event and used Haunted House staff. Many Netherworld crew are now involved with production of the AMC TV series, The Walking Dead. Several key staff are members of the Special Effects Makeup and Costuming unions.
