New Milford High School is a four-year, public, coeducational high school in New Milford, Connecticut. Currently, approximately 1,600 students attend the school. Although a majority of the students attending the school are from New Milford, others are from the nearby towns of Sherman and Washington. The school is located at 388 Danbury Road in the town of New Milford and is a part of the New Milford School District. Other high schools in the district include the Canterbury School and the Faith Church Preparatory School, although New Milford High School is the only public high school.

Architecture

Construction on the new school was finished in 2000 after the town's municipal authorities (under the leadership of then-Mayor Arthur J. Peitler) voted to reorganize the public school system. Changes included redefining the elementary school as K-3rd grade, introducing a new intermediate school, redefining the middle school as 7th-8th grade, and constructing a new high school. These changes sparked a controversy over the amount funding taxpayers would need to supply for the changes to be completed. For this reason, the pool in the original plan for the new high school was never constructed. To this day, upper-class students of the school jokingly respond to freshman students' inquiries about the pool by saying "the pool's on the fourth floor," despite the building's three-floor structure. There are in fact stairs that lead beyond the third floor, but the area is only used for storage.

The school is in the shape of an "H," with two hallways on each open end of the "H" on the first floor. The auditorium and the band room are in the first hallway and the physical education areas are in the third. Each hallway is given a number. The hallway with the main entrance is #1, the middle hallway is #2 and the hallway with the back entrance facing the football field is #3. The room numbers ar four digit numbers. The first digit is the floor, the second digit is the hallway number, and the last two digits are the room number. For example, the German language classroom is on the first floor, third hallway, and is the 18th classroom in that hallway, therefore the room number is 1318. Similarly, if the room number is 3117, it's located on the third floor, in the first hallway and is the 17th room in that hallway.

Athletics

The New Milford High School Boys' cross-country (X-Country) team won its tenth consecutive Southwest Conference (SWC) title in 2011.[2] They also won the New England title in back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004, a competition pitting the best 24 schools against each other out of more than 400 schools from Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and Rhode Island. They also boasted a 75-meet win streak from September 11, 2001 until October 2007. The team won the 2012 State Open Championship as well. [3] New Milford High School's wrestling team snapped Danbury's 260-match win streak and ended the year ranked #1 in Connecticut in the 2010-2011 season.

Song

The New Milford High School athletics department has a fight song given as a gift from Tulane University (also the Greenwave) after New Milford's fundraiser to help Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina.[4]

Activities

New Milford's other activities include chorus, cheerleading, color guard, concert band, marching band, and winter percussion ensemble.
