Nuclear damper

A device in science fiction capable of stopping a nuclear explosion as it is occurring.

In fiction

The Nuclear Damper is featured in the science fiction Traveler (role-playing game); where the device manipulates the strong nuclear force within a field. Applications include accelerating the speed at which radioactive particles shed radiation until they are inert; as well as preventing nuclear decay by raising the potential barrier around the nuclei. The nuclear damper can also be used to cause nuclear warheads to shed neutrons at lower energies by lowering the potential barrier.^[1][2]

A similar device is featured in the Incredible Hulk comics, called the Absorbatron. Invented by Bruce Banner the Absorbatron can absorb the energy of a nuclear explosion, and thereby render any nation that possessed it immune to nuclear attack.^[3]
