Based on its official site's[2] FAQ page, "Obnam" is an acronym that stands for: OBligatory NAMe

  2. Snapshot backups
  3. Data de-duplication, across files, and backup generations
  4. Encrypted backups
  5. Supports both PUSH (i.e. Run on the client) and PULL (i.e. Run on the server) methods
