The annual Ontario Mining Cup is a mining industry Hockey tournament held each spring in Timmins, Ontario to determine the top mining industry team in the province.[1] The event is currently hosted by the Porcupine Branch[2] of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).

History

The Ontario Mining Cup was founded in 2013 by mining engineer and politician Steve Black.[3][4] The tournament is a round robin competition followed by a single elimination playoff that has determined the mining industry champion since the inaugural 2014 Ontario Mining Cup Hockey Tournament.[5] The tournament features 16 teams representing a variety of mining sector organizations (mine operators, suppliers, contractors, universities and colleges). Entry is determined on a first come, first served basis. The winners of the previous Ontario Mining Cup Hockey Tournament receive automatic entry the following year.

Scholarships

Proceeds from the tournament go towards the O E Walli Foundation CIM Porcupine Branch Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards for Students in Mining and Instrumentation at the Haileybury Campus of Northern College .[6][7][8]
