PCTE Group of Institutes

PCTE (Punjab College of Technical Education) was first institute established by the Punjab Management Education Trust in 1999 at Ludhiana, Punjab with the motive of providing good management and IT education in the region. Since then, it has expanded to Pharmacy,[1] Biotechnology, Airlines, Tourism, Hotel Management, Journalism and Mass Communication.[2] Now PCTE Group of Institutes has four colleges offering different courses in two campuses Near Baddowal Cantt on Ferozpur Road, Ludhiana with a current strength of more than 2700 students from more than seven different countries pursuing full-time courses like BCA, BBA,B.COM (Professional), B. Pharmacy, BSc. (ATHM), BSc. (Biotech), B. HMCT, MCA,[3] MSc. IT, MBA,[4] MBA-IB[5] and PGDM.[6] All the courses are affiliated with Punjab Technical University while PGDM is an AICTE approved, independent course.

PCTE has been consistently ranked with the best B-Schools in Punjab, HP, J & K, and Rajasthan by various national magazines and journals, including Outlook, Business India, and AIMA.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] PCTE also has been conferred with different awards of National and International repute.[7]

Student achievements

Since the inception of the college in 1999, PCTEians have won high honors for their academic performance in university exams, including 13 gold medals, 12 silver medals and 9 bronze medals.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] Besides that around 90 students have made it to the university merit lists in past decade.[35]

Students who graduate from PCTE are recruited at a high rate by a variety of corporations.[36][37][38][39] PCTE also hosts 'job fairs' and invites corporations to 'placement weeks' and 'recruitment drives' in order to facilitate hiring.[40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]

School awards

International conferences

Since 2004,[57] PCTE has organized international conferences in which scholars and researchers from many Indian states[58] and various countries – including Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and UK[59] – have presented their research papers in Business Management and IT.[60] The objective of these conferences has been to provide a single platform to the industry and academicians to share and discuss trends and technologies for the development of manpower, as per industry requirements.[61] These conferences have received very good response from scholars across the globe and industry.

Faculty members and students from PCTE also participate in international conferences sponsored by other organizations.[62][63][64][65]

PCTE Group of Institutes has signed nine MOUs (Memoranda of Understanding, or agreements of cooperation), including institutions in Bangladesh, England/United Kingdom, Mozambique, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and South Africa.[10][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74] Seven faculty members teaching in a university in Mozambique joined PCTE for the academic session 2010-2011. PCTE has a number of agreements with foreign universities. Some are meant to facilitate research and faculty/scholar exchange, while others include student exchange as part of a wider MoU.[75] PCTE has attracted students from many countries – including Afghanistan, Ghana, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe[3][74][76][77][78] – along with a research scholar from Cameroon.

Publications

PCTE has been publishing two bi-annual international Journals titled as PCTE Journal of Business Management and PCTE Journal of Computer Sciences covering the various articles, researches and reviews on management issues and in computer Sciences respectively.

PCTE Editorial team is also editing quarterly journal titled, M-World on the behalf of Ludhiana Management Association, most prominent industrial body of the region, addressing various management issues.

Student activities

The student community at PCTE has been very active.

PCTE was listed in the Limca Book of Records 2005,[80] for being the only B school for undertaking a very practical exercise to enrich students with the hand-on knowledge about the intricacies of Indian stock market, its operations and dynamics. The students actually pool in funds and invest in the market for learning. A portfolio of scrips is planned and managed by the students every year, who are themselves responsible for all decisions regarding the buying and selling of scrips. They manage all financial activities related to bank account, financial decisions and D-mat account.

Koshish is an intra-class cultural and literary extravaganza,[81][82][83][84][85] held in the month of September–October every year, in line with developing the confidence and providing exposure to the students. Classes compete among themselves in varied events to lift the overall trophy. As many as 1,700 students of PCTE participate each year,[86] showcasing their talent and abilities in dozens of different cultural and literary events like British parliamentary debate, solo dance, short skit, western group dance, dumb charades, turn coat, fashion show, face painting etc. International delegation may also be invited as guests of honor at the festival.[87]

Ehsaas is PCTE’s international, inter-institutional cultural-cum-literary festival.[88][89][90][91] Since year 2000, it has been organized multiple times both in India and in Pakistan. Events at Ehsaas may include a car rally,[92] "dumb charades, face painting",[93] "a fashion show, folk and western dances, solo and duet singing, mime, one act plays, fusion music, poetry etc."[91] At Ehsaas 2006, 700 students participated on four teams from Pakistan – NCBA & E-Lahore, FAST-Peshawar, IQRA-Islamabad, and SZABIST-Islamabad – and 25 professional institutes from various parts of India, and around 6000 visitors attended the show.

The Institute of Hotel Management at PCTE also organises a food festival called Daawat-e-Khas. The event combines ethnic foods of India – both popular dishes and unusual fare – with live music.[94]

Students also organize other events. One example is a singing contest organized in 2009 by the PCTE Institute of Hotel Management.[95] Another example is a 2010 cross-country run with a theme that promoted traffic safety and warned participants to "Say no to drugs".[96]

Besides these, PCTEians have won many awards at various cultural, literary, and IT events held nationally and internationally.[97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105]

Sport is another area of activity and competition for PCTE students.[106][107]

PCTE Group of Institutes recognizes that to-day’s world requires young men and women who not only have knowledge about the modern technologies and business techniques but also have practical knowledge to use these technologies. They are expected to be able to put their knowledge to practical use immediately after entering the industry. Hence PCTE has consciously made efforts to give latest and practical knowledge to its students in every discipline such as Management,Information Technology, Journalism, Medical Lab Technology,Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Hospitality Management and Airlinesbeyond the syllabi prescribed by the University.

PCTE is an approved institution by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Ministry of HRD and Govt. of India and affiliated to Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar.

At PCTE it is felt that an Academic Environment is essential for integral growth – intellectual, emotional and social persona of the students. To achieve this end, faculty and students are continuously and actively involved in various academic, cultural and sports activities. This includes holding conferences, inviting eminent people from industry and academic institutes for Guest Lectures, visits to Industries, holding various cultural activities like singing completion, ‘Nukad Natak ’ and sending teams to compete in cultural activities like Drama, Bhangra etc. to reputed institutes in the region. In addition a week-long cultural extravaganza ‘Koshish’ is held every year. Competitions in various sports are held throughout the year in addition to the Annual Athletic Meet.

PCTE understands its Corporate Social Responsibilities and fulfils them by holding activities such as regular blood donation camps and health check-ups. Run for cause is a regular part of PCTE Athletic Meet, wherein students pledge their commitment to societal causes.

In order to make the professional education more effective, PCTE has taken the following steps:

Structured approach to respond to the development and administration of courses socially relevant to current market needs. Our senior faculty members are actively involved in syllabus development and modification at the University level as members of Board of Studies and ensure that University syllabi are regularly updated according to market needs. Regularly developing pedagogic methodologies and techniques which are the strategic strength of the Institute. Ensured attention to the traditional academic fields such as Marketing, Finance, Information Technology etc. along with the upcoming areas like Biotechnology, Hospitality and Tourism.
