Pai is a surname from coastal Karnataka in India. It is found among Hindus of the Goud Saraswat Brahmin community. Families with the surname Pai, are Saraswat Brahmins who speak the Konkani language, but are mostly bilingual in Kannada and Tulu. They were mainly ledger keepers.[1][2]

The surname Pai comes from the Sanskrit word pati meaning Lord.[3]

The name is also in use among some Konkani Catholics who trace their ancestry to the Goud Saraswat Brahmins of Karnataka and Goa.[4]
