Palamedu is a panchayat town in Madurai district, Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Geography

Palamedu is located at 10°07′N 78°07′E / 10.12°N 78.12°E / 10.12; 78.12.[1] It has an average elevation of 227 metres (744 feet)

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Palamedu had a population of 8187. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Palamedu has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 54%. In Palamedu, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Bull Taming (Jallikattu) was one of the Famous historical event held every year in the month of January 15th.People from Overseas come and spend time during the month of January.Here Palgova(Milk Sweet)is very famous in south India.

Kodaikanal, Vaigai dam, Alagar Koil, Kumbakarai falls are some popular tourist spots nearby. Another recent identified water falls named 'Kutladampatti' is very near. Thekkadi, Suruli falls, Kourtallam are also near to this place and it is 100 km away from here. There is a small dam ('Sathiyar') near Palamedu. Madurai is accessible by 20 km. Alagarkovil & Alanganallur is also too close.

Schools

One Matriculation School namely "P.H.N.U.S.P. Pathirakaliamman Matric School is located here. More number of students from nearby villages are studying here. Government School and other private schools are also located here.

Economy

Palamedu has a moderate monsoon climate condition. People in this area are mainly cultivated 'Guava', 'Ground nut', 'Rice', etc. More number of people are engaged in producing dairy products. Milk is supplied to all over the southern parts of Tamil Nadu.
