Pawn Ticket Trio is a jazz band based in Denver, Colorado. The group is self-categorized as playing "hack jazz", a style fused with rock structures and jazz stylings set to humorous lyrics and attention to solos. The group formed in late 2007 as an effort to bring the songs of guitarist John Lambert to a wider audience, and to serve as an experiment for a group of people who had always liked jazz in their own ways, but had never had a chance to play it. The band consists of founding members John Lambert on guitar, Bret Ahroon on bass, and Stephen Brooks on drums. Early in 2008 the band experimented with a young trumpet player by the name of Dan Madden. Shortly after a couple of live shows they added Mr. Madden to the band on a permanent basis. In 2009, Lambert and Ahroon asked Keith Larson to join the band on trombone, and Matt King was added to play the saxophone. They do however continue with the "trio" name as the band was initially incepted as a three piece.

History

Bret Ahroon had known John Lambert on and off for years as a regular at open-microphone venues around Denver, where the guitarist had fashioned a name for himself as "Johnny Monotone". Voicing a liking for the Lambert's songs, Ahroon talked Lambert into forming a band. The two rehearsed together as a duo until Ahroon brought in drummer Stephen "Tick-tock" Brooks. For the better part of a year the trio rehearsed (when it could) in apartment buildings, back rooms of clubs, and a once-a-week open-mic gig that helped them shape their style as well as their live music approach.

Oh-La-La Burlesque

Pawn Ticket Trio joined forces with Oh-La-La Burlesque in August and has since held a regular gig at 3 Kings Tavern in Denver becoming their house band. The trio performs originals and does shared numbers with several ladies of the burlesque troupe. With the acquisition of saxophonist Matt King, trumpet player Dan Madden and trombonist Keith "K-Bone" Larson, the band has worked on tightening as a band, dressing in suits and performing regular shows in and around the Denver Metro Area. Pawn Ticket Trio and Oh-La-La Burlesque often book out-of-town engagements at various Colorado resort hotels. Pawn Ticket Trio has the distinction of being the only regular live-burlesque band in Colorado.

Recorded music

Pawn Ticket Trio has fashioned itself as a live band through various shows in and around Denver and by way of it being the House Band at 3 Kings. In late 2008, following several requests from fans and critics alike, the band started work on its first ever studio album. The band is currently mastering its record, which was recorded in late 2008/early 2009 at The Blasting Room, a prestigious studio in Fort Collins noted for its history working with and recording punk rock bands.

Other bands

Although Pawn Ticket Trio is gaining in popularity in and around Denver, all the members (with the exception of Lambert) play in other bands around town, all with varying different music styles. Ahroon is the bassist for a Denver hard core punk rock band; Suburban Hostage. King, Madden and larson play and record with a Denver Ska band named The Dendrites and Brooks taps on the drums for local favorite; Houses.
