Peter Shaindlin is a hotel executive, and is currently Chief Operating Officer of Halekulani Corporation,^[1] an acclaimed luxury hotel group in Honolulu, Hawaii. An internationally recognized cultural critic and active worldwide keynote speaker^[2] on luxury-related topics, he is a visiting fellow^[3] and research scholar at University of Oxford, Harris Manchester College SRI performing research and scholarship on the leadership of iconic institutions.

Hospitality career

Called a visionary in the global luxury hospitality industry,^[4] Shaindlin has gained professional recognition in a career spanning four decades.^[5] Prior to joining Halekulani Corporation, Shaindlin was founding principal of Lotus Luxury Group, vice president for Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and previously managed institutions such as Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the Boca Raton Resort, The Stanhope Hotel and Grand Bay Hotel in New York City and oversaw food and beverage operations at the Headquarters of the United Nations as assistant general manager.

Shaindlin has played an active role in the arts and culture community in Hawaii for more than a decade, facilitating philanthropic efforts and initiatives through the encouragement of partnerships between institutions. He has spearheaded Halekulani Corporation’s current arts and culture partnerships including ʻIolani Palace, Hawaii Symphony, the Bishop Museum and Hawaii POPS, Chamber Music Hawaii, Hawaii Theatre, Hawaii Opera Theater, University of Hawaii, Pacific New Media, Hawaii Book & Music Festival, Honolulu Museum of Art, Liljestrand House, Shangri La (Doris Duke) and title sponsorship of the Hawaii International Film Festival.^[6]

Shaindlin has also lectured at ESSEC College of Luxury Brands and Hospitality in Versailles, France and Lynn University in Florida.

Professional affiliations and board memberships

Shaindlin is on the executive board of Hawaii Arts Alliance,^[7] Hawaii Pops,^[8] the Merwin Conservancy^[9] and the International Luxury Hotel Association^[10] and is past Chairman of the Hawaii Symphony and the executive board of The Honolulu Symphony Foundation.

He has served on the boards of the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Employers Council and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii.^[11]

Arts and music

Shaindlin's photography is represented by Westwood Gallery in New York City^[12] and has been exhibited at major American art fairs including ART MIAMI^[13] and ART WYNWOOD.^[14] He has four published books by Deuxmers LLC, the novella Citizen Steele, and three volumes of poetry: 18 Passions,^[15] Joys and Sorrows and The Swans of Pergusa.^[16] His jazz composition Notre Amour with lyrics by Peter Shaindlin and Dawn Herron and arranged by Grammy Award winner Bill Cunliffe is recorded on the upcoming jazz album Between the Music and the Moon (June 2016) featuring singer/pianist Maggie Herron. He founded and leads an alternative jazz ensemble, Drift, based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Personal

Shaindlin is a son of the late film composer and musical director Jack Shaindlin. He has two daughters, Valerie Brett Shaindlin and Lana ‘Svetlana’ Sophia Shaindlin.

Education

Shaindlin attended New York University, and studied for a degree in music from the New School for Social Research/Mannes College, New York. His artistic studies included art history, literature, creative writing, poetry and fine art photography. Additionally, he holds a Certificate in Negotiating Skills from Harvard University.

Shaindlin is a faculty member of University of Hawaii’s Pacific New Media School. In May 2016 he participated as the discussant in a panel led by Dr. Dongping Zheng from University of Hawaii at the 2016 East-West Philosophers Conference with the theme 'From Ancient Wisdoms to Modern Mediated Spaces: Relationships between Meaning and Action.'
