Prunus huantensis is a South American tree native to mountain forests of Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia.

Description

It is a shrub or tree up to 27 m high,[1][2] with brown lenticellate branchlets.[1] Leaves 6.5--17 cm long, 3.5--7 cm wide; ovate, with a rounded base; rigid, coriaceous; shortly denticulate.[1][3] Flowers arranged in an elongated raceme up to 17 cm long; sepals 1 mm long; petals up to 3 mm long.[1] Fruits are black, spherical, up to 1.9 cm wide.[1][3]

Distribution and Habitat

Prunus huantensis can be found in mountain forests at 2500--3500 m of elevation,[1][4] from southern Colombia to central Peru.[1][3][4]

Vernacular names

Names recorded for this species are: inca-inca (in central Peru);[1] pipe (in Pataz Province, northern Peru);[5] pandala or pundé (southern Colombia);[6] sacha capulí, capulí, laurel or canelón (in Ecuador).[2]
