Ravi Kumar Narra is an Indian businessman and social worker from Secunderabad, known for his efforts for the upliftment of the dalit community. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to society.

Biography

The main hurdle faced by Dalit entrepreneurs is from the banking sector. Banks are not extending capital to new entrepreneurs without collateral security in spite of Centre's stipulation that up to One crore should be given by not insisting on it. Ravi Kumar Narra says about the attitude of the banks towards dalit entrepreneurs[1]

Ravi Kumar Narra was born on 1 September 1963, to late Shankaraiah Narra,[2] who was a daily wage mason, in a family with meagre financial resources,[3] in a slum in Secunderabad, commonly known as the twin city of Hyderabad, in the south Indian State of Telangana.[4] He graduated in science, (BSc), and continued his education in law and secured a graduate degree, LLB and, later, the master's degree of LLM. He also secured a diploma in journalism (DJ)[2] and a diploma in Public Relations.[3]

Shri Ravi Kumar Narra, Padma Shree Awardee, a multi faceted personality is the mirror of Dalit empowerment having rose from the most deprived background to earn recognition as a business entrepreneur, a social activist as well as one of the architects of championing the cause of the deprived sections of the society, in particular Dalits. Born to slum dweller parents, his father worked as a daily wage mason and mother as a maid servant, Ravi struggled his way to seek education and become a qualified professional in Law, with a Post graduate degree, besides completing Post Graduate Diplomas in Journalism and Public Relations. His emphasis on these academic pursuits led to his evolvement as a person with varied interests and objectives. With the aim to attain success foremost, Ravi ventured into the domains of business, very unlikely amongst Dalits. He today spearheads a fledgling business agglomerate into big group in the process breaking the barriers of casteism, social inequality and discrimination. Going beyond, he has spearheaded several initiatives concerning the business community, Dalit empowerment and entrepreneurship; social causes etc., exhibiting his commitment to serve the society at large.

Business

Ravi forayed into Infra – with his organisation Shanti Chakra Associates, Aditya Communication attaining a name of repute in construction industry, building Residential units – Houses as well as Apartments etc., in Andhra Pradesh / Hyderabad. He also exhibited a keen sense of business acumen and ventured into Digital services in AP.

Leadership

A committed individual who seeks to work relentlessly for positive causes, Ravi has shaped many a path with his attitude to lead from the front. He is the founder Chairman of the Greater Hyderabad Builders Federation which holds a membership of over 2000. In this capacity, he can be credited to have been amongst the prime movers of the plans to ensure balanced and strategized growth of Hyderabad in the last one decade, ensuring high standards of construction and adhering to the prevalent Municipal / Metropolitan norms.

Dalit Enterprise

Ravi is the emerging face of Dalit empowerment and Enterpeuneral skills. He has acted as the sheet anchor for varied initiatives towards attaining the goal of Dalit sustenance through the years in these specific spheres, thereby giving a new direction into domains that hitherto were not pursued by the Dalit community in General. Ravi is the coordinator for the unique business body established in the country, the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI) in South India covering five states as also the President of DICCI, Andhra Pradesh Chapter since 2011. With DICCI being closely associated with Government of India and the confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Ravi utilised the Platform to move ahead on the course of establishing a new identity for Dalits, as capable of being success full entrepreneurs. In the process, he has been instrumental in producing many a business leader.

Multi Tasker /Pivotal Player

Ravi espouses a dedication to harness the potential of the Dalit community towards the path of Business & Industry, a domain otherwise an enigma to these sections. On the sidelines of DICCI, he has developed an avenue for Dalit Entrepreneurs, developing their entrepeuneral skills, enhancing their awareness on aspects of economy & growth and imbibing them with personality & communication competence.

He has been a member of the National Task Force (NTF) of the Government of India, for Affirmative Action and Supplier Diversity and worked in close coordination with the body, in formulating the programme on the issues, thereby enabling Dalit Entrepreneurs to diversity into industry and commerce on the strength of a firmly drawn up work order to execute.

As a member of the National Governing Board of DICCI, Ravi holds credit for being instrumental in modifying the Government Industrial Policy 2010-2015 which has given earmarked space for Dalit entrepreneurship, thereby getting them into the mainstream of trade and commerce. Ravi has been able to show case his organisational skills towards uplifting the Dalit youth / business persons by organising the one of its kind event in the country – IGNITE, a 21 days residential programme for 220 Dalit Entrepreneurs including 40 women from all over Andhra Pradesh at the NIMSME, Hyderabad. This Entrepreneurship Development Programme, networking all agencies on a single platform – the Government, CII, Banks, Training Institutions etc., to fine tune, Impart and evolves the skills of the participants encompassing all spheres to make them confidently stride their chosen path of profession.

A Social Activist

The need for evolving the Personality and Communication capabilities amongst Dalit youths who had suffered the psychological trauma of depression was channelized by Ravi, who has been relentlessly working under the Aegis of DICCI to import training and enhance skills amongst them by means of regular seminars / programmes over South India. Ravi has been able to focus on the aspect of business networking by organising B to B meeting, offering consultancy services, guidance for financial & banking support so as to provide the right window of opportunity to the Dalit Entrepreneurs. Ravi has made a mark as one of the most active leaders of Lions Clubs in AP, with a specific mission to serve the needy classes. He is not just a regular blood donor but also has handled the responsibility of being a Zone Chairperson, in Lionism to organise several Health camps etc., He is actively associated with the Jaycees International too in this task of service to society.

Founder for a Cause

Each year on 14 April, the Birthday of Babasaheb Ambedkar, Ravi has been instrumental in organising a public awakening "Run for Caste Free India" in Hyderabad towards eradicating the evil of casteism, which is a more potent danger to the Indian Society than dreaded diseases as AIDS & Cancer. This run has grown over the years with leaders from every section of society cutting across ideologies and beliefs uniting for the cause. This run is widely sponsored by the Media by means of an extensive campaign and is all set to become a nationwide event from 2014.

Leading a unique Service Organisation

Ravi is the founder of Shanti Chakra Foundation,'[5] a service organisation to develop networking amongst Dalits, which strives to spread the Philosophy of Dr B R Ambedkar and enlightenment amongst the people against superstitions. On the strength of this foundation, Ravi has innovated a unique concept of self sustenance, self-respect and self belief amongst all sections of the Dalit community. . Ravi has single handedly ensured that the Foundation undertakes weekly classes for the Dalit masses particularly youth on subjects cutting across the spectrum so as to enhance knowledge and awareness, without any interruption for the last 150 weeks in Hyderabad. He is a champion espousing the cause of Human Rights amongst the people so as to protect the interests of the oppressed sections, a quality that led him to hold the post of District Secretary / Human Rights in Lions International. He organises an annual event "Prabuddha Bharat Utsav" each year on 26 January, the Republic day when the constitution framed by Babasaheb was adopted for the country. This event is a get together of families for a day of socialising, interacting, show casing skills and bonding for a better Dalit tomorrow. The high point is, each individual pays for their own self and joins the event conveying an image of self-respect. Right form his student days, his leadership skill came to the fore and was assigned with major positions in student and political bodies. His dedication to serve the society, particularly the Dalit Community led to his invitation for various National / International seminars and conferences worldwide. As a representative of the Government of India, Ravi has attended International Youth Conferences held in Cuba – 1997, Algeria – 2001 and Venezuela – 2005 besides visiting the USA, UK, Germany, France, Brazil, Egypt etc., as a part of various delegations. He used this expertise and experience to strive and significantly contribute towards upliftment of the weaker sections & dalits in spheres as Business, Industry, Personality, Education, Social Equality etc., the hall mark of a man on a mission - to serve.

Awards and recognitions

Ravi Kumar Narra was honoured by the Government of India by awarding him the Padma Shri, in 2014, in recognition of his services to the society.[6]
