Playing career

Del Basso first played for the Australian West Coast Ice Hockey Association in 2005.[1] In 2006 he joined the West Coast Flyers of the Ice Hockey WA Super League before moving across to the West Coast Avalanche for the 2008 season.[2][3] For the start of the 2009 season Del Basso rejoined the Flyers for whom is currently playing for in the 2011 Super League.[3][4] He has also represented Western Australia at the Goodall Cup state competition in 2009 where he played five games, scoring two goals and two points in games against South Australia and Victoria.[5][6] In the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL), Del Basso plays for the Perth Thunder.[7] He attracted media attention in Australia and overseas during the 2014 season when he celebrated a match-winning shootout goal by completing a headstand and somersault on the ice.[8]

Del Basso was first called up to represent Australia in 2005 where he joined the national under-20 team to compete in the 2006 IIHF World U20 Championships Division II Group A tournament being held in Bucharest, Romania.[9] Australia finished fifth in the tournament only ahead of New Zealand and Del Basso finished the five game tournament with only six penalties in minutes.[3][9] The following two years he again played in the under-20 team at the World Championships and was named the top player on the team during the 2008 tournament.[3][10] In 2009 Del Basso was named on the national senior team to compete in the 2009 IIHF World Championship Division I Group A tournament being held in Vilnius, Lithuania. Australia lost the tournament and were demoted to Division II for the following year.[11] After two years out of the national team Del Basso was recalled to compete in the 2012 IIHF World Championship Division I Group B tournament being held in Krynica, Poland. He failed to score any points during his five games at the tournament and Australia was relegated to Division II Group A after finishing last.[12]

Del Basso was born on 24 April 1988.[3] He was a director for the Perth Thunder until November 2013, where he resigned due to work commitments.[13][14]
