Richard D. Segal

Richard D. Segal^[1] is Chief Executive Officer of Seavest Inc.,^[2] a private investment firm that invests in early and growth stage companies primarily in the education, life sciences and consumer technology sectors. Seavest also has extensive holdings in healthcare real estate.^[3] Richard has had a career-long focus on healthcare and education in particular, both in business and through extensive work with non-profits and philanthropic efforts. His deeply held commitment in these key areas reflects his view of healthcare and education as the twin pillars of a thriving, vital society. Richard’s passions extend to the arts as well. The Seavest Collection of Contemporary Realism^[4] is a collection that comprises some of today’s most innovative and exciting artists.

The wealth management and family office services that Richard provided to the Segal family and other private investors led him to found Seavest in 1981. Over the next two decades, Seavest steadily grew from a family fund into a boutique investment management firm focused on developing, acquiring and managing healthcare real estate properties.

Today, Seavest is a highly successful investment firm that partners with exceptional entrepreneurs and provides them with strategic guidance, management expertise, and access to its extensive network in order to build successful and enduring companies. In addition to a national medical office building real estate portfolio, the firm has made successful strategic investments in companies such as Wireless Generation^[5] (acquired by News Corp. for $400M), Schoolnet^[6](acquired by Pearson for $230M) and Tout.^[7]

In his work outside Seavest, Richard^[8] is the President of the A.L. Mailman Family Foundation,^[9] a charitable foundation focused on early childhood care and education. He serves as a Trustee of Nova Southeastern University,^[10] the Hole in the Wall Foundation^[11] (Paul Newman's^[12] camps for children with cancer) and New York Presbyterian Hospital,^[13] and is also a member of and the New York Presbyterian Heart Center Steering Committee. He also serves as a Trustee of the Whitney Museum of American Art.^[14]

Richard serves as chairman of the board of directors of Nat Nast Inc., a designer of men's luxury apparel, and as a member of the board of directors of SchoolNet Inc., a provider of software solutions for public school systems.He is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Nasher Museum at Duke University.^[15] Richard is also Chairman Emeritus of Publicolor and a Trustee Emeritus of the Big Apple Circus.

Personal life

Richard is the son of Marilyn Mailman Segal. He lives in Rye, New York with his wife, Monica.
