Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Sarikei or SMK Bandar Sarikei, also known as SMKBS,is a government secondary school in Sarikei.

In 2009, SMK Bandar Sarikei have 1322 orang students, of which 652 are male and 670 female. The school also has 106 teachers.^[1]

History

SMK Bandar Sarikei, originally known as Sarikei Town Government Secondary School which located at 10.6 acres. The building was leased from the Methodist Secondary School. At that time there were only two blocks but at the end of 2010 SMKBS had 21 blocks. The school started with three staff, Wong Kwong Soon (principal) and two teachers, Mr. Benjamin Lim and Ms. Hossein Arjuna.

Since its establishment there was a notable increase of student placements at SMKBS. Hence, the school divided the classes into two sessions. Preparation Class (Kelas Peralihan) and Form 1 students had their class in the afternoon session and the rest were in the morning session. In 1979, SMKBS moved into permanent buildings which were approximately 500m from the original building. There are secondary schools nearby such as SMK St Anthony (3.9 km), SMK Tinggi Sarikei (4 km) and SMK Sg Paoh (12 km). In 1982 former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad opening the school building.

On 17 Mac 1985, a meeting was held to consider the establishment of Parent Teacher Association (PIBG) SMKBS. On 14 May 1985, a letter of application and charter of PIBG were sent to the school registrar and Main office of Lessons For Registration Sarawak. On 3 December 1985, PIBG SMKBS officially registered with the registration number 58/85.

In term of academic achievement, for the first time recorded in SMKBS achieved a success result in SPM 1992 and also the launching of 2 Science stream classes. The school's SPM result in the following year reached the 100% pass for the both classes. SMKBS continue offering classes for Form 6 in 1994. In 1996, SMKBS recorded 100% in STPM and 80% of their students qualified for the certification. In this public exam also, the best student achieved a 4A.

With the contribution and co-operation from academic and not academic staffs, as well as the PIBG SMKBS, students continue to achieve their progress and improvement in the field of academic and not academic from year to year. SMKBS now move forward in various activities within and outside the school level in line with the slogan and school anthem "Gemilang SMK Bandar Sarikei".
