Shunpike

This article is about the non-profit organization. For avoiding tollroads, see Shunpiking. For the character in the Harry Potter series, see Stan Shunpike.

Shunpike is a non-profit arts organization that functions primarily as a fiscal sponsor. The organization is based in Seattle and works mostly with artists from the Puget Sound Region.[1] In July 2009, Shunpike opened a satellite branch in Tacoma.[2]

History

It was founded in 2001 by a group of young artists and arts administrators to support the local arts community. Since 2001, the organization has supported work by more than 1,000 artists working in live performance, film, literary arts, visual arts, and arts education.[1] Among its services Shunpike offers fiscal sponsorship for arts groups, acting as an umbrella non-profit that allows organizations to take advantage of the benefits of its 501(c)(3) non-profit status without having to deal with the lengthy process of obtaining such status.[2]

Spaceworks Tacoma

In partnership with the City of Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber, Shunpike is working on developing and managing this initiative to fill vacant retail spaces in downtown Tacoma with art and creative enterprise.[3]
