Sigard, Count of Hainaut

Sigard (Sigehard) (died 920), Count of Hainaut and Count of Liège. Sigard was apparently second cousin to King Zwentibold, although the precise relationship is unknown.

Sigard replaced Reginar I as Count of Hainaut in 898 after his removal as count by Zwentibold. Despite the death of his benefactor and relative Zwentibold in 900, Sigard appatently retained control of some portion of Hainaut through his death in 920.

The transition from the House of Reginar to Sigard and back is confusing and remains unclear. Some accounts have Reginar I returning to power in 908, to be succeeded by his son Reginar II. Others identify a mysterious count named Hagano who ruled through 921. Still others identify Enguerrand II, son of an Enguerrand I, Count of Gent, Kortrijk and Tournai, as the count from 921-924.

It is certain, however, that the county returned to the family of Reginar with the assumption as Count of Hainaut by Reginar II in 915. Any marriages or children of Sigard are unknown.
