Students for Britain is a student campaign, affiliated with the Vote Leave campaign, which argues that Britain would be better off outside the EU.[3] The organisation stresses the cost of the EU, barriers to trade with the rest of the world and how undemocratic and remote the EU is in their view.[4][5][6] The campaign has been labeled by some as Vote Leave's 'militant wing'.[7]
The campaign claims to be active in "over 50 universities",[8] and is most notable for protesting during the CBI's 2015 conference, whereby two members of the organisation heckled the Prime Minister, holding a sign that read "CBI = voice of Brussels".[9] The students gained access to the conference by creating a fake company.[10] The organisation claimed that the students "wanted to protest to make this point to as many people as possible".[11]
Affiliate Vote Leave has also produced "specially designed condoms"[12] which university students distributed. The "clever" condoms displayed slogans such as "the safer choice" and "it’s riskier to stay in". The chairman of Students for Britain, Tom Harwood, was quoted as saying "They are a great and fun way to get people talking/interested."[13][14]
The group was notably denied status as an official society at Keele University, allegedly for having the word 'Britain' in its name.[15][16]
The campaign rivals Students for Europe,[17] which argues for a 'remain' vote and is a component of the European Movement.[18]
