Ternopil Lake (Ukrainian: Тернопільський став, known as Komsomol Lake before 1992, non-official Ternopil Lake) is a large artificial pond, a reservoir set in the center of Ternopil in the place of swamps on the river Seret. Today Ternopil pond is surrounded by a park. It is a favorite walking place of residents and visitors of the city. Address: Ternopil, Russkaya Str.

History

It was created in 1548 by Crown Hetman Jan Amor Tarnowski as one link in a chain of fortifications encircling his residence, the Tarnopol Castle. In the 16th century the pond stretched for 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) up to the high dam carrying the Lwów Highway. At the beginning of 20th century, the pond was leased by Ternopil businessman Volodymyr Trach, who exported fish to Poland.

In addition it was also used for fish breeding. The pond, formerly renowned for its fisheries, had silted up by the mid-20th century and was further damaged during the Second World War. During the Second World War Ternopil pond was completely destroyed. It was reconstructed and expanded in 1952 to include a network of marshes bordering the Seret River when there was a massive rebuilding of Ternopil - and when it was decided to transfer the water resources of all local authorities in 1956, they began to recover Ternopil pond. Then it was built a new dam - and the water level was higher than before. The new reservoir has taken a much larger area - more than 300 hectares, and it was named as Komsomol lake. It was laid a Shevchenko Park between the reservoir and the city center, which stretched along the eastern shore of the lake. It was also built the Island of Love. In 60 years, the beach near the Old Castle was eliminated and there were built a central pier and a set parking for boats, yachts and motor boats.

There is an old Soviet motor ship still operating on the pond. In 1968 it was appeared the ship in Ternopil named in honor of Gregory Tantsorov - one of the liberators of the city from German occupation. The ship itself was built in 1963 in Belarus. It was called "Zalishchyky." In 1966 a small ship "PT-50" was appeared on the lake ("Passenger ship - Fifty Project"), built in 1966. In 2005, the ships were passed to the balance of municipal enterprise “Ternopilelektrotrans”. The overhaul of "The Hero of Tantsorov" made in 2006.

A local version of the Jet d'Eau was inaugurated in 1975. The pond has significant economic importance: in the 21st century, it employed four mills that brought big profits to the city, and there were a lot of fish in the lake: pike, perch, carp, and others. In the 1980s the landscaping around the Komsomolsk lake did not stop. It was created a hydropark "Pioneer" behind the dam, which later was renamed as "Topilche." A hotel "Moscow" was also built at the foot of the Forest Park "Zagrebellya". Subsequently, the hotel got the name "Halychyna". Also Ternopil pond has two islands: the island of Love and "The Seagull" (“Chayka”). There were a lot of carps, catfishes and pikes on the Ternopil pond. There are also a lot of algae; the lake dominated by the yellow water lily that blooms in the late June. To the west of the pond near the village Pronyatyn there were various types of willows. Also, wild ducks and gulls swim and breed in Ternopil pond.
