Thomas J. Maloney served as the first mayor of Pittston City from 1894 to 1898. Pittston officially became a city on December 10, 1894. Before it became a city, it was known as the Borough of Pittston. Thomas J. Maloney, before becoming mayor, served as the last burgess of the borough (1893 to 1894).

Term in office (1894-1898)

Thomas J. Maloney was sworn in as the first mayor of the City of Pittston in 1894. The following year (in 1895), the Pittston City Police Department was established.^[1] During his second year (in 1896), he traveled to Ireland. Michael J. Langan was his temporary replacement (acting mayor). On June 28, 1896, the Twin Shaft Disaster killed Langan and he was replaced by Charles Calvin Bowman. Bowman remained the acting mayor until Maloney returned home from Ireland. Thomas J. Maloney would then serve out the remainder of his term until 1898. Maloney's successor was Benjamin Harding (who served as the second mayor of the city from 1898 until his death in 1899). ^{[2] [3]}
