Ultra HD Forum

Ultra HD Forum is an organization whose goal is to help solve the real world hurdles in deploying Ultra HD video and thus to help promote UHD deployment.[1] The Ultra HD Forum will help navigate amongst the standards related to high dynamic range (HDR), high frame rate (HFR), next generation audio, and wide color gamut (WCG).[1] The Ultra HD Forum is an industry organisation that is complementary to the UHD Alliance (that maintains consumer-facing logos), covering different aspects of the UHD ecosystem.[2]

History

On July 21, 2015, the Ultra HD Forum announced that they had over 20 member companies after incorporating as a US-based non-profit a month earlier.[3]

On April 18, 2016, the Ultra HD Forum announced industry guidelines for UHD Phase A content.[4][5][6] The Ultra HD Forum also announced that it had increased to 46 member companies.[4]

UHD Phase A

Some of the guidelines for UHD Phase A are a bit depth of 10-bits per sample, a color gamut of Rec. 709 or Rec. 2020, a frame rate of up to 60 fps, a display resolution of 1080p or 2160p, and a dynamic range that uses HLG, PQ, or SDR.[6] UHD Phase A defines HLG10 as HLG, a bit depth of 10-bits, the Rec. 2020 color space and defines PQ10 as PQ.[6] UHD Phase A documents live production and pre-recorded production and the combination of HDR and SDR video content.[6] UHD Phase A also describes how to convert between HDR technologies and how to convert between SDR and HDR.[6]

On July 15, 2016, the Ultra HD Forum released their guidelines for UHD Phase A.[7] UHD Phase A defines HDR as having a dynamic range of at least 13 stops and WCG as a color gamut that is wider than Rec. 709.[7] UHD Phase A consumer devices should be able to decode the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Main 10 profile Level 5.1 and be able to process HLG, HLG10, PQ, HDR10, and the Rec. 2020 color space.[7]
