Vembu Technologies is a privately held, information technology company that specializes in developing software products in Backup, Disaster Recovery and cloud storage domains. Vembu’s products serve data center IT-Administrators in small and medium businesses managing VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V and Physical Server environments. Founded by Sekar Vembu in 2002, Vembu is currently headquartered in Chennai, India.

History

First Product - SwisSQL

Vembu’s first product was SwisSQL, which was targeted at database administrators(DBA). SwisSQL is a database migration tool to solve problems of multiple SQL dialects and it was launched by Vembu in April 2003.[1] In Dec 2003, Vembu sold SwisSQL product line to AdventNet (which is now called Zoho Corporation).[2] After transitioning SwisSQL to AdventNet (Zoho), Vembu focused on Backup and Recovery domain from June 2004.

Launch of StoreGrid for Offsite Backup & Recovery

Vembu launched StoreGrid in 2005 for Managed Service Provider(MSP) community who started using StoreGrid for their managed offsite backup service for small business customers.

Acquisition of Cloud Nucleus

In 2012, Vembu acquired Cloud Nucleus, a Chennai, India based company developing technology for disk image backups.[3] Vembu integrated the disk Image backup technology into StoreGrid to support backup of application aware disk image backups for both physical servers and desktops.

Launch of Vembu BDR Suite for Virtualized Data Centers

In 2014, Vembu launched its data center Backup and Recovery software, the Vembu BDR Suite, to focus on Virtualized Datacenter Backup and Recovery market for medium size businesses using VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. The company's decision to move away from the Managed Service Providers to Data Center IT-Administrator faced a backlash from the MSP community.[4]
