The Wetterstein Formation is a geologic formation in the Northern Calcareous Alps and Drau Range of the Eastern Alps, in Austria and Bavarian Germany, Central Europe.[1][2]

Geology

It was formed in the Canarian age of the Late Triassic epoch in the Triassic period, during the Mesozoic Era.[1][2]

Deeper burial cementation shows a succession with two types of saddle dolomite and three types of blocky calcite. It contains Wetterstein Limestone elements.[1]

Fossils

The formation preserves fossils dating back to the Lower Ladinian−Upper Canarian ages of the Middle and Late Triassic epochs of the Triassic period.[3]
