Development

In July 2016 it was announced that Paul Dano would adapt Richard Ford's novel with a script he had co-written with Zoe Kazan, and that neither Dano nor Kazan would act in the film.[3] Dano stated "In Richard’s book I saw myself and many others. I have always wanted to make films – and have always known I would make films about family."[4] The film was to be produced by June Pictures, with president Alex Saks as a producer, as well as by Nine Stories Productions.[5] In September 2016, it was announced that Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan would star in the film.[5]

Filming

Shooting for the film will take place in Montana as well as Oklahoma due to concerns with the winter weather in Montana.[6]

Release

Producer Alex Saks expressed plans to release the film at a festival, and said that "We will probably secure distribution before the premiere and then we will defer to the distributor for a release date, but hopefully it will release toward the end of 2017."[6]
