William Hammond (cricketer)

William Hammond was a nineteenth century cricketer who briefly played first-class cricket for Kent and a Gentlemen of Kent and Surrey XI between 1855 and 1857, before emigrating to the United States where he played cricket for over ten years until 1868.[1] Born in Maidstone, Kent,[2] Hammond was a batsman of unknown handedness who debuted at Lord's in July 1855 with two single-figure scores against a Gentleman of England XI.[3] He represented the Gentlemen of Kent and Surrey again in August that same year, making two scores of seven.[4] He then went on to make his only appearance for Kent in June 1857 where he made his career best score of 17 against Surrey.[5]

Despite this modest first-class record, Hammond enjoyed a substantial career in club cricket, playing for clubs in Maidstone before emigration to the United States in 1859 led to him representing Germantown, an English Resident's XI, the Philadelphian cricket team, the Boston cricket club and the fledgling United States cricket team.[6] He died in Brooklyn, New York City.[2]
