XGen Studios, Inc (stylized as XGen Studios) is an independent video game development studio based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Since 2001, XGen Studios has released 12 internally developed titles for consoles, mobiles, and the web, including the #1-selling hit[1] Defend Your Castle for Nintendo's WiiWare Service and Day-1 PS4 title Super Motherload.[2][3]

History

XGen Studios was founded by Skye Boyes in 2005. After the success of XGen's early browser-based games, Skye dropped out of Computing Sciences, incorporated the company, and began to accumulate staff.[4]

In 2007, XGen Studios announced that they had obtained a license to develop for Nintendo's Wii system, and intended to develop a WiiWare title.[5][6]

It was revealed in 2008 that Defend Your Castle would be part of Nintendo's WiiWare launch line up.[1][4][7][8]

In 2011, XGen Studios announced that they would take Amanita Design's Machinarium to WiiWare.[9][10] The project was eventually cancelled as of November, 2011 due to the WiiWare platform's game size limit.[11][12][13]

In 2012, the company was listed as one of Alberta's "25 Most Innovative Organizations" by Alberta Venture magazine.[14]

In 2013, Sony announced that Super Motherload would be a Day 1 title for the PlayStation 4.[15]
