"XY" is the first episode of the eighth season of the comedy-drama TV series Castle and originally aired on ABC on September 21, 2015.

Plot

A woman murders a man in a bar. No one else notices.

While Castle is giving Beckett a present in celebration of her first day as Captain Beckett, her phone rings. After a short conversation, she tells the caller she is not interested and tells Castle it was a telemarketer.

Castle goes to his PI office where he finds that Alexis has things well in hand and that the contractors did a great job remodeling the office. Ryan and Esposito call and say they have a murder. Since Castle has no active cases he goes to the crime scene. There they find three bodies and the present that Castle gave Beckett that morning, along with a pool of her blood. A lead brings them to the apartment of one of the murdered, where they meet Hayley Shipton, a security expert from the UK. She tells them about an identity theft ring that stole millions of Social Security numbers. All the murders from that morning were carrying ID that were names from that list. She also tells them there were two more people in that ring, a man and a woman. They can't hold her so she leaves. Castle follows her and pleads with her about his wife. Another lead brings them to an industrial dry cleaners, where they find out that Kate is with a mystery man.

Alexis calls Castle and tells him he needs to drop by The PI office, where he finds Hayley giving Alexis advice. Hayley tells him she has a lead and they start to go out the door - Alexis tells him she may have a clue, he tells her they'll talk about it later - Hayley tells Alexis to just go for it. Hayley brings Castle to a storage locker filled with guns where they are ambushed by the woman from the murder at the bar. The bar woman wins the fight and gets away, but not before leaving a clue on Ms. Shipton's jacket.

A lead comes in that Beckett visited Senator Bracken in prison. Castle goes to see Bracken, but all Bracken does is taunt him. As Castle is leaving the prison, he is kidnapped and drugged. The man and the woman torture him to try and find out where Beckett is. When they are finally sure that Castle doesn't know, they get ready to kill him, but Beckett intervenes and then leaves. They capture the woman, who refuses to tell them anything except that there are more than five people, and then dies. Then the man who tortured Castle is shown with a large group of people, all heavily armed.

Last scene - Kate Beckett looks out a window and then turns back into the room, the camera pans down the block as two SUVs pull up and a large group of people, all heavily armed and guns drawn get out and make their way into the building.
