Simone is a female/male given name derived from Simon, Hebrew Simeon, meaning "one who hears". It first appeared in Iberia from the 10th century, as Jimena, Ximena. Simone itself is the French spelling; it is sometimes spelled Simonne.

Simone - pronounced see-MAW-ne - is also the Italian spelling of the male given name, Simon; the Italian feminine form is Simona.

At present, it is common in Portuguese.

The feminine form Simona is popular mostly in Bulgaria, Italy, Macedonia and other Balkan and Slavic countries.
