Yukta Mookhey (born 7 October 1977) is an Indian actress, model and beauty queen. She was crowned Miss World 1999 in London.

Early life

Mookhey was born in Bangalore and was raised in Dubai until Mookhey was seven years of age. The Mookhey family moved back to Mumbai in June 1986. Her mother Aruna runs a grooming consulting firm and her father was a doctor. After school, Mookhey studied zoology at V.G. Vaze college. Mookhey has a diploma in computer sciences and has studied Hindustani classical music for three years.[2]

Miss World

The 49th Miss World pageant was held on 4 December 1999 at Olympia, London. Mookhey was crowned Miss World 1999 beating 93 delegates from other countries. She became the fourth woman from India to win Miss World after Reita Faria in 1966, Aishwarya Rai in 1994 and Diana Hayden in 1997.

Career

Mookhey entered the film industry and her first film was an item number in the 2001 Tamil movie Poovellam Un Vasam directed by Ezhil, starring Ajith kumar and Jyothika in the lead roles. She made her Bollywood debut with Pyaasa in 2002 starring with Aftab Shivdasani. The film proved to be a flop at the box office.[3] In 2005, she acted in two films Memsahab and Love in Japan and in 2006, she appeared in the music video Kathputali.

Personal life

On September 7, 2008, Mookhey got engaged to Prince Tuli, a New York-based businessman and financial consultant at a ceremony held at the Grand Maratha in Mumbai.[4] The marriage was held on November 2, 2008 in a traditional Sikh ceremony at a Nagpur Gurudwara followed by a reception.[5] They have one son together.

In July, 2013, Mookhey lodged a domestic violence complaint against her husband and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered under Section 498A (cruelty and harassment) and Section 377 (unnatural sex or rape) of Indian Penal Code.[6] In June 2014, the couple obtained divorce through consensus.[7]

Charitable works

Mookhey engages in social and charitable causes for the poor and underprivileged.[8] In 2010, she donated her eyes.[9] Mookhey and Aishwarya Rai are some of the few Bollywood celebrities who have donated their eyes.[10][11]

Politics

In 2004, Mookhey became member of the political party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is an active member since then.[12][13]
