Saraswati Education Society's High School and Junior College, more commonly known as SES High School, is one of the oldest educational institutions in Thane city of India, located at Panchpakhadi,^[1] teaching pre-primary (Jr and Sr Kg), primary (1st to 4th), secondary (5th to 10th) and junior college (11th and 12th), catering to over 3500 students and well knit team of 82 teachers.^[2] It is a cosmopolitan co-education institution. Students are admitted from Jr. K.G and imparted education up to HSC (12th) Science/Commerce in English medium. High school and Jr. College receives grant from the State Government where as Primary is unaided.^[3] The school has been recognized as one of the six best administered schools in the whole of Maharashtra by the U.G.C.^[4]

History

Late Shri G. S. Shivram, born in Gopalsamudram, a small village in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, was the founder president of Saraswati Education Society.^[5] He started a Tamil Medium school, called S.V. with like minded people near Ghantali in Thane with 4 classrooms in the year 1952. However the strength of people opting Tamil Medium was deteriorating and there had been a demand for English medium school. Accordingly, the Saraswati Education Society was established in 1953-54 and was registered under Public Trust Acts in 1956.^[6][7]

Campus

The school has a large ground, surrounded by its three storey building from three sides in U-shape. The school has three gates, a statue of Saraswati (Goddess of Knowledge) being established at the entrance of the main gate. The school has 3 Science Laboratories, namely, for Chemistry, Biology and Physics, equipped in accordance with the specifications of national examination boards.^[8] The campus possesses all the amenities for the overall development of the students: auditorium, playground, games hall (recently converted into a auditorium hall with AC), music room, drawing room. Classrooms are spacious (average area: 500 sq. ft.), well ventilated and have lighting arrangements as per standards.^[9]There are smartboards in each and every classroom for the quick concept grasping of various subjects for the students.

Ground Floor

• The ground floor has offices of Principal, Trustees, Administration, and classes specifically for pre-primary (Junior and Senior Kindergarten) section.
• It also has rooms for Home Science,Chemistry lab.
• At the corner, lies a vast Games Hall (auditorium).

First Floor

• The Staff room lies on the first floor, along with offices of Vice-Principal and Supervisor.
• Adjacent to it, lies the Music room. The floor also has a huge Drawing room.
• It also has Conference room.

Second Floor

• The Headmaster's office (of Primary section) lies on this floor.
• Biology lab is also on the same floor.

Third Floor

• A part of third floor has 4 classrooms of the junior college section (1st Year and 2nd Year - Commerce & Science).
• It also has a vast computer lab, with facility of 38 computers providing state-of-the-art computing facilities.^[10]
• A library is in the corner of the floor.^[11]

All the major festivals are celebrated in the school. In addition, it also organizes several events for students' overall development.

Sports

The sports week begin by second week of December, wherein various matches of volleyball, cricket, football, kabaddi, langadi are played between teams of 10th and 12th standards. In the 3rd week, Sports Day is organized, wherein many shows (karate, lezim, aerobics, gymnastic demonstrations) are presented by the students many races (running race, lemon-n-spoon race, sack race, slow cycling race) take place, and the Finals are held the next day.

Annual Function

Annual Day is held in the month of February, wherein an imminent personality is invited as the chief guest, who inaugurates the school magazine Strides and presides over prize-distribution ceremony. The principal presents the annual report of the school, and felicitates teachers who have completed particular number of years and the Chairperson of Students' Council gives the vote-of-thanks. Many dances, skits, dramas and finally, orchestra by school band are presented by the students.

Students' Council

The council plays an important role in helping to maintain the discipline of the school and to co-ordinate various co-curricular activities under the able guidance of council in charge teacher. It inculcates leadership quality and incorporates a sense of responsibility among students.^[14]

Composition

Students' Council is a body divided into four departments, namely, Discipline, Culture, Fine Arts and Sports. Each department is headed by a male and a female elected secretary of First Year Junior College (FYJC). In addition, 10 members are selected from FYJC, to assist the council. From the school, each standard from 5th to 8th, sends 1 representative (other than class-monitor) from each division (each standard has four divisions); and 10 members are selected from the 9th standard, to assist the council.

Thus, in all, the Council is made up of 56 members. To lead them, a Chairman is elected by the Junior College, and a Vice-Chairman is nominated from the 9th standard. The term of the Council is one year and every year, new members form part of the Council. Two teachers-in-charge are appointed to guide the council.^[15]

Chairperson

Being the representative of all the students of school, plus college, the role of Chairperson is to head the entire Council, and all the secretaries and its members. During Teachers' Day celebration, he plays the role of the Principal. During Sports Week, he has to play one match from the students' side. During Annual Function, he welcomes the Chief Guest and presents the Vote of Thanks. He motivates the students to involve themselves in extra-curricular activities. He also has to submit Chairperson's Report in the school's magazine, Strides. Throughout the year, he has to encourage students' participation and maintain discipline.

Achievements

• Akshay Ganesh Kumar (student till 2013-14) scored AIR 7 in AIPMT 2014^[16]
• Anisha Motwani (student till 2012-13) had scored 100% in 2011 in her SSC examination,^[17] and continued her junior college in S. E. S. itself.
• Ashay Sardesai (student till 2012-13) got selected in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) squad of 15 cricket team for the under 14' in 2011. He scored more than 1,000 runs in 2009 and 2010 each. He was given the best batsman award and best player of the tournament award in many matches.^[18][19]
• Mekhala Paranjpe (student till 2013-14) stood 2nd in the Group E category at All India Camel Colour Contest - Largest Art Competition in the World declared by The Guinness World Record^[20]
• Palak Gupta (student till 2013-14) had scored 100% in 2012 in her SSC examination,.^[21] and continued her junior college in SES itself. Even Sanjana Nene (100% & 1st in Mumbai Board), a student of St. John the Baptist High School, joined the SES junior college.^[22][23] Both were students till 13-14 of Science stream.
• Soham Diwadkar (student till 2011-12) bagged the 1st position at Maharashtra State Level athletics championship at Balewadi, Pune in 2010.^[24] He represented in 2013 the state at the national events organized by the Athletics Federation of India.^[25] In 2014, he put up terrific show in the 100m boys under-18 sprint at 39th YMCA State Athletic Championship held in Mumbai, winning the event in record-breaking 10.9 secs.^[26][27]
