Douglass Township is a township in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,306 at the 2010 census.

History

The Ironstone Bridge and Pine Forge Mansion and Industrial Site are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 12.8 square miles (33 km2), of which, 12.7 square miles (33 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (0.31%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,327 people, 1,200 households, and 930 families residing in the township. The population density was 261.6 people per square mile (101.0/km²). There were 1,239 housing units at an average density of 97.4/sq mi (37.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 89.18% White, 9.32% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.

There were 1,200 households, out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 18.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the township the population was spread out, with 26.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $52,306, and the median income for a family was $55,573. Males had a median income of $40,235 versus $24,764 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,895. About 3.2% of families and 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

The area is served by the Boyertown Area School District.

Emergency services are provided by the Douglass Township Police Department, Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue (North Sector), Amity Fire Company and West End Fire Company (South Sector), and Boyertown EMS (North Sector) and Goodwill of Pottstown (South Sector), all of which are dispatched by the Berks County Communications Center.
