Enar Jääger (born 18 November 1984) is an Estonian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Norwegian Eliteserien club Vålerenga and the Estonia national football team.

Club career

Early career

Jääger began playing football with Flora Academy in his local Kehtna. In 2000, he had short spell with Tervis Pärnu. In 2001, at the age of 16, Jääger started his professional career by signing a contract with Flora. He played there only one league match in 2001, before joining Valga on loan. After two seasons with Valga he returned to Flora. He won the 2003 Meistriliiga with the club.

Torpedo Moscow

On 3 February 2005, Jääger signed a three-year contract with Russian Premier League club Torpedo Moscow.[1] 12 days later he played his first game for Torpedo Moscow against Metalurh Donetsk.[2] In Russia often played as right-back, but even in front of the defence as a defensive midfielder. His club Torpedo Moscow were relegated from the Russian Premier League at the end of the 2006 season, and he then moved to Norway.

Aalesund

On 7 March 2007, he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Norwegian Eliteserien side Aalesund.[3] He played his first Norwegian Tippeligaen match on 16 May 2007, in a 4–0 victory against Strømsgodset.[4] Jääger scored his first Premier League goal on 20 April 2008, in a 5–0 victory against Hamarkameratene.[5] He left the club in late June 2009.[6]

Ascoli

On 19 July 2009, Jääger signed a three-year contract with Italian Serie B club Ascoli.[7] Failing to make an impact at the team, his contract was mutually terminated on 30 January 2010, after just five league appearances.[8]

Return to Aalesund

After refusing an offer from Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls Jääger rejoined Aalesund on 5 March 2010.[9] The first-choice right-back played the whole match when the team won their second Norwegian Cup in three years.[10] After refusing a contract extension, he left the club after the 2011 season.[11]

On 5 January 2012, Jääger passed a medical at Polish Ekstraklasa side Lechia Gdańsk, but rejected the contract offer to pursue other options.[12][13] He then had a test period with Scottish Premier League champions Rangers.[14][15] Ally McCoist was impressed and keen to sign him, but the player eventually left the club without an offer after the trial period ended as Rangers failed to reduce their wage bill to make room for him.[16][17] On 5 February 2012, he started a trial at English League One side Charlton Athletic, which was cut short due to bad weather conditions at the time.[18][19] English Championship sides Crystal Palace and Leeds United were also rumored to be interested in the player.[20][21]

Jääger joined Aalesund for the third time on 13 March 2012, after an improved one-year contract offer was made by the Norwegian club.[22][23]

Lierse

On 15 July 2013, Jääger signed for Belgian side Lierse.

Return to Flora

In 2015, Jääger returned to Estonia and rejoined Flora. He was named captain ahead of the 2015 Meistriliiga season.

Vålerenga

In August 2015, Jääger was loaned to Norwegian Eliteserien side Vålerenga. The move was made permanent on 4 January 2016.[24]

International career

Jääger made his debut for Estonia in a friendly match against New Zealand on 12 October 2002.[25] Jääger played his 100th game for Estonia on 19 November 2013 against Liechtenstein, a day after his 29th birthday.[26][27]
