Joseph Biddle Wilkinson, Jr.

Joseph Biddle Wilkinson, Jr. (February 20, 1845 – October 23, 1915) was a Member of the Board of General Appraisers. He was also the great-grandson of James Wilkinson.

Biography

Wilkinson was born on February 20, 1845, in Pointe Celeste plantation, Louisiana. He attended the Virginia Military Institute and served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865, during the American Civil War.

After the war, he was a planter in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana from 1865 to 1885. He served as Chief Clerk for the New Orleans Customs House from 1866 to 1890.^[1]

Federal judicial service

On July 2, 1890, President Benjamin Harrison nominated Wilkinson to serve as one of nine judges on the newly created U.S. Board of General Appraisers. He was confirmed by the Senate on July 16, 1890, and received his commission the same day. He served on the board in New York City, until his resignation December 15, 1899. (He was succeeded by Marion De Vries in 1900.)^[1]

Death

Wilkinson died on October 23, 1915, in Myrtle Grove, Louisiana.^[1]
