This is a list of earthquakes in 1944. Only magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Activity was spread across the world during this year. The southwest Pacific Islands saw a good proportion of the earthquakes. Japan had the largest event of the year in December. Argentina and Turkey had the bulk of the deaths. The quake in Argentina in January was the worst in the country's history. New York State had its largest recorded earthquake in September causing some damage.

January
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck just off the west coast of southern Sumatra, Indonesia on January 5 at a depth of 45.0 km.[1]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea on January 7 at a depth of 114.4 km.[2]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Guerrero, Mexico on January 10 at a depth of 15.0 km.[3]
- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck San Juan Province, Argentina on January 15 at a depth of 15.0 km. With 8,000 dead, this was the deadliest earthquake in Argentine history. Property damage costs were around $100 million (1944 rate).[4][5]
February
- A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Cankiri Province, Turkey on February 1 at a depth of 30.0 km. This was the latest in a series of deadly earthquakes in Turkey over the last couple of years. Cankiri Province itself had been struck by another devastating quake at the end of November 1943. In this event 2,381 people were killed and major damage was reported.[6][7]
- A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the south coast of Hokkaido, Japan on February 1 at a depth of 160.0 km.[8]
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Yukon Territory, Canada on February 3 at a depth of 35.0 km.[9]
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck coastal Hualien County, Taiwan on February 5 at a depth of 20.0 km.[10]- A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Puno Region, Peru on February 29 at a depth of 183.1 km.[11]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck southeast of the Maldives on February 29 at a depth of 15.0 km. This was an unusually strong event for the area.[12]

- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck northern Xinjiang Province, China on March 9 at a depth of 10.0 km.[13]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck northern Xinjiang Province, China on March 9 at a depth of 10.0 km. This is an example of a doublet earthquake. Three people were killed and some homes collapsed.[14][15]
- A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Lembata, Indonesia on March 22 at a depth of 156.6 km.[16]
- A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Banda Sea, Indonesia on March 31 at a depth of 65.0 km.[17]
April
- A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Golestan Province, Iran on April 5 at a depth of 7.0 km. Twenty deaths were reported as well as property damage.[18]
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Chontales Department, Nicaragua on April 7 at a depth of 200.0 km.[19]- A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Fiji on April 23 at a depth of 370.0 km.[20]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck just off the north coast of West Papua (province), Indonesia on April 26 at a depth of 15.0 km.[21]
- A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck West Papua (province), Indonesia on April 27 at a depth of 15.0 km. This was very close to the city of Manokwari.[22]

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Huila Department, Colombia on May 9 at a depth of 100.0 km.[23]- A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Fiji on May 25 at a depth of 632.7 km.[24]
- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck north of New Ireland (island), Papua New Guinea on May 25 at a depth of 15.0 km.[25]

- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Northern Mariana Islands on December 4 at a depth of 56.7 km.[64]
- A magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck off the south coast of Honshu, Japan on December 7 at a depth of 15.0 km. This area frequently experiences large events including one which follows in 1946. This quake left 1,223 dead and 2,135 injured. Major damage was caused with 26,146 homes being wrecked. A tsunami caused much of the devastation.[65][66][67]
