Beginning 1981, Messianu worked as a Creative Director at firms including McCann Erickson, Mendoza-Dillon, GSD&M, Lintas and Scali, McCabe, Sloves.[4] In 1994 Messianu co-founded the Miami advertising firm Rivero Messianu. A small stake was sold to DDB, before Messianu and Rivero bought the company back in 1998.[5] The idea behind the firm was to create a new creative and strategic multicultural advertising agency.[6] The firm then again partnered with DDB in 2001, forming the company Rivero Messianu DDB.[7] At the firm, Messianu was the Chief Creative Officer and co-founder from 1994 to 2007, when he also became President of the company after del Rivero left.. The company was thus renamed Alma DDB.[5]

Campaigns that Messianu has worked on include those for State Farm,[2] McDonald's, ExxonMobil, Clorox, Hidden Valley, Perdue, and others—in which he has focused on the US Hispanic marketplace.[7] These campaigns have included the formation of musical groups intended to both act in advertisements for radio and television, but also to tour as stage-acts at music venues and festivals, such as Los Felinos de la Noches.[8] Messianu was named to Ad Week’s Diversity Trendsetter list in 2013.[9] He has also won both the HispanicAd’s Agency Executive of The Year and Creative Director of the Year.[10] He also received the 2015 ADCOLOR Legend award.[1]

Other work

In 2001, Messianu founded Circulo Creativo, and then became chairman of the nonprofit association dealing with Hispanic marketing in the United States in 2014.[11][12] Messianu has also been a judge for the annual Billboard Latin Music Marketing Awards[13] and a member of the board for the Miami Ad School.[4] Messianu is a contributor to periodicals including Ad Age.[14] He also authored the book La Prisión De La Memoria in 2014.[15]
