Streptococcus zooepidemicus is a species of Streptococcus.[1]

Streptococcus zooepidemicus is a Lancefield group C streptococcus. It is a mucosal commensal and opportunistic pathogen of several animals and humans. It is a clonal ancestor of S. equi with which it shares greater than 98% DNA homology and many of the virulence factors.

In March 2016, there was a rare case in the United States, of a 71 year old woman contracting the disease from a horse and dying in the result of that infection.[2]
