Āhār Yojanā (meaning "Food" in Odia) is a food subsidisation program run by the Government of Odisha to provide cheap lunch to urban the poor at five rupees. It was inaugurated on April 1, 2015 by the Chief Minister of Odisha Navin Patnaik on Utkal Divas. The scheme provides meals in five major cities of Odisha.[1] The actual cost of the food is around 20 but is subsidised to 5 with financial assistance from the Odisha Mining Corporation.[2] It is targeted at more than 60000 people per day.

About the Scheme

The mission of this scheme is to provide cheap lunch to labourers who travel to big cities in search of work. The Government launched the scheme in five major cities of Odisha in order to ease the inconveniences of labourers. Ahar stalls are mainly found in crowded places like hospitals, bus stands or railway stations to serve lunch at just 5. The hygiene of the food is checked by different Municipal hospitals.[3]

Menu and prices

Food provided under this scheme is Bhātā (cooked rice) and Dālmā at 5. The Āhār centres provide food at the designated places at 11 am and 3 pm everyday.

There are in total 100 Āhār centres in pipeline covering all the districts of Odisha.
