Pumpkin Center, Indiana
Pumpkin Center is an unincorporated community in Orange County, in the U.S. state of Indiana.[1]
History
The community was probably so named from its location in a pumpkin growing district.[2] This is a community in rural, Orange County, Northeast Township, Indiana. Add and Mable Gray ran a country store and consignment business at Pumpkin Center. In their store they sold groceries, soft drinks, ice cream and cheese (and many other things). The cheese was provided in a round block and could be cut into wedges and purchased. It was a popular place for local farmers and residents to congregate and swap stories and experiences. Our farm was located just a mile from the store and my Dad, Harold Freed, and Grandpa, Raymond Riester, were regular customers. The store was in its hey day in the 1950s and 1960s. The locals called it "Punkin Center" and it is located on a road that is still called the "Tater Road" by locals.
