Columbia Township is one of the twelve townships of Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The 2010 census found 4,532 people in the township.[3]

Geography

Located in the eastern part of Hamilton County, Ohio, the township divides into several "islands" by annexations. The principal ones have the following borders:

  • Norwood Green- the western most island:
  • Ridgewood- a west island:
  • Ridge & Highland (East & West)- the largest island:
    • Silverton - northeast
    • Madeira - east
    • Cincinnati - surrounding
  • Stewart Road - the northern most island:
  • Madison Place (North & South) - a central island:
  • Plainville - Wooster Pike- the southern most island:
  • Wooster Pike (West) - south central island:
    • Mariemont - north
    • Anderson Township - south

Columbia Township is occupied by the following municipalities:

  • The city of Cincinnati (the county seat of Hamilton County), in the west
  • The Village of Fairfax, in the center
  • The Village of Indian Hill in the eastern half of the township

Some of the remaining township (only about 2.5 sq mi (6 km²) in area) is land unsuitable for development, especially the banks of the Little Miami River.

Name and history

Statewide, other Columbia Townships are located in Lorain and Meigs counties.

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer,[4] who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees.

Joint Economic Development Zone (JEDZ)

On November 5, 2013 the residents of Columbia Township voted to establish a Joint Economic Development Zone (JEDZ) and to implement an earnings tax on individuals working in the Zone and on net profits from businesses in the Zone, in partnership with the Village of Fairfax.
