Kuřim (Czech pronunciation: [ˈkur̝ɪm]; German: Gurein) is a town in the district of Brno-countryside in South Moravian Region. It is situated 14 kilometers north-west of Brno and about 5 kilometers from the dam Brněnská přehrada. In 2011 there were 10 857 inhabitants. It is the largest town of Brno-Country district. There is a prison for convicted men aged 18 years and more on the outskirts of the town.

History

The first written record about a town was in 1226 when Přemysl Otakar I. (Ottokar I. of Bohemia) issued a charter about the payment of tithes to the church of Saints Peter and Paul. It is thought that the town was founded in the 12th century during Premyslian colonization.

Monuments

The town has only four monuments. First and most well known is the church of saint Mary Magdalene founded in 1226. There is also a castle from 14th century which belongs to the cultural heritage of the Czech Republic. There is a water chapel of John of Nepomuk and a statue of saint Florian.
